2009 Grenache

2009 L’ Imposteur Grenache Vin de pays d’Oc, France

This second release of L’ Imposteur Grenache is from the great 2009 French vintage. France is notorious for enforcing appellation rules and regulations hence why this wine is now AOC Collioure from Vin de pays d’Oc. Families own certain plots of land for generations as it passes from one member to another. An opportunity to get my hands on some grapes was a far-fetched dream come true. Permission granted – there were days that I felt a little like an imposter amongst the renowned and celebrated French winemakers. Special thank you to Pierre Gaillard and his family for making my dream come true.

I found incredible 60+ year old bush vines on terraced “Cru” vineyards up to 400 meters above sea level – overlooking the Mediterranean ocean; Cambrian soil (just like Heathcote) intermixed with schist and perfect weather. Ideal growing conditions for Grenache made from very low yields of 12 – 14 Hectoliters per hectare.

The wine displays deep ruby/purple colour, gorgeously fragrant nose of framboise, Asian spice, soy and black raspberries with dried Herbes de Provence. Dense and medium bodied – it offers sweet ripe black cherries, baked earth, Asian spice, scents of white pepper and cured meats, juicy with glycerin but round with no hard edges and velvet soft tannins.
