2016 Demi by Syrahmi is a blend of two vineyards across Heathcote. South of Heathcote, Shelmerdine’s Tooborac vineyard “The Flat” on granite-based soil and to round off the blend is the close-planted Greenstone vineyard fruit from rich the 550-million pre Cambrian red soils in the North.
Winter and spring were atypically dry with a very warm summer but not extreme. ‘Early Easter early picking’ they say, which resulted in a new record for me, picking starting 9th February with extremely good colours, rich flavors and balanced tannins with the last vineyard picked on the 27th February.
Deep dark crimson in colour with bright red hue. Intense perfume of lifted wild raspberries, black olives, soy and turned earth. Think red licorice and crushed black cherries. The palate shows the best of Heathcote. Savoury dried herbs and spice, graphite and tapenade again, with very fine tannin coming from the 75% whole bunches during ferment, balanced red fruits leading though a long savoury finish. Showing more finesse than the previous 2015 Demi, it’s all about weight and elegance meeting fruit and tannin. The natural acidity keeps the wine fresh and alive.
